BALLAD OF THAT CHATTERBOX COQUETTE – Horia Badescu – translation Daniel Ionita
It was sometime in April, I remember
Perhaps in nineteen seventy and… what,
My soul was full of bones like crimson ember;
Buried in fear and boredom, and all that.
And at the Mongol’s inn, in shadow’s beauty
With good old wines, and scents, and no regret,
There came a time I had to pay my duty
Of love towards that chatterbox Coquette.
Beneath the sunset of her eyebrows parting
I yearned for my first worship to progress,
From which her mouth would lazily be starting
The nightly bud of passion to undress.
She carried in her eyes a sad carnation
Which lingered on the seconds passing by,
And thus proclaimed my fall into temptation
With teary fingers, twilighting the sky.
But where is the sweet snail her ear was forming,
Which rested on her temples’ sleepy tress?
And where for her, my voice tried performing
A poet’s songs, a velvety caress?
And were, the rounded shape, and languid frailty
Of words, for which we oftentimes would pine?
And where, her bosom, vanquished, shy and dainty?
And where, her lovely ankles’ starry shine?
And where, her thighs’ angelic adumbration.
And where is her surrender’s white regret?
Oh where, the hour cast beyond creation,
Of love towards that chatterbox Coquette?
