Russia Pilgrimage 2011

Very Limited Space...

I'd like to invite you to join me and a small group of pilgrims — less than 10 — for a very special pilgrimage to Russia for the Feast Day of Our Lady of Kazan.

I have traveled to Russia 15 times, and I will be with you the entire pilgrimage.

This is a spiritual pilgrimage with the main goal to build friendships through personal contacts with Catholic and Russian Orthodox leaders, Americans and Russians. We will learn about the history of Russia and the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, while we share our faith and hope with the Russian people whom we meet. We will meet with our fellow Catholics in Russia. We plan to meet with Catholic and Russian Orthodox officials in Kazan, Moscow and St Petersburg, in the hope of discovering the needs and aspirations of the Russian people today, 20 years after the dismantling of the Soviet Union and the end of state atheism. We hope this will be the first of many such pilgrimages and that it will lead to spiritual, cultural and personal exchanges, which will bear much fruit.

We have designed to begin with a visit to Kazan on the feast day of our lady of Kazan, July 21. (photo of icon, left) We will celebrate this feast with pilgrims from around the world where the icon was revealed in 1579.

We will stay 3 nights in Kazan then travel to Moscow, the capital, where we will stay in the Danilovskaya Hotel located in the "Vatican" of the Russian Orthodox Church for 4 nights. We will visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Kremlin and Red Square (photo left), the Hovodevichy Convent and the American Embassy.

After an overnight train in a sleeper compartment, we will arrive in St. Petersburg (the old capital) and stay for 3 nights. While in St. Petersburg we will travel to Pushkin and visit the Peterhof Palace and the Aleksandro-Nevsky monastery (photo left), which for many years became the center of the spiritual life of St.Petersburg, and the Hermitage Museum.

These are just a few of the highlights.

The schedule is a full and fascinating one, and time is built in for rest, so we hope and believe it will be a once in a lifetime experience. In particular, we expect to have a few meetings with Catholic and Russian Orthodox Church leaders not usual for such trips to Russia.
